The position of each dog is rotated on occassion to give everyone a chance to learn something new. The positions listed here are the most common placements of each team member.

Here at the kennel we are very fortunate to be a foster home for some of the sled dogs at the Fairbanks animal shelter. As we bring in new fosters to our kennel we are able to evaluate them, place them into our main team or form a smaller 'chase team' that follows our main string. Through this evaluation we are able to observe the behavior and work ethic of each dog as an individual. This is vital information that will
ultimately help them to
find the perfect home.

If you have additional questions about any dogs available for adoption in our kennel, drop us a line at Cooper@LeadDogGraphics.com

You are more than welcome to set up an appointment with us to see these foster dogs in person or even bring out your own team to 'test drive' an individual with a Lead Dog Spock Kennel musher. If you dont have enough dogs for a team we are happy to add in a few of our own to make a short trip around our local trails.

Lead = The lead position is reserved for a dog with a calm personality, a natural desire to be first on the trail, intelligence to pick up commands quickly and a keen sense to avoid dangers such as open water or detecting weak ice that could be a real danger to the team.

Swing = Some dogs have the desire to lead but not the mental toughness to work the position all the time. Swing is great place for dogs not ready to take the jump to full leadership. It is also a great position to train young leaders while helping them gain a feel of the responsiblity required for full leadership.

Team = The team position refers to any dogs running between the swing and wheel positions. Dogs who do not have the desire to lead and just need a place to work fall nicely into 'team'. This is a great place to start young or timid dogs as most feel comfortable if they have a dog to follow and learn from.

Wheel = This position is usually reserved for the largest dogs on the team. The wheel dogs natually pull most of the weight by working directly in front of the sled. With large powerful dogs in wheel a team is sure to have a great start, even with a heavily loaded sled.

Loose Runners = Loose running behind the team is a great way for older dogs to remain active as they grown older and loose the stamina to keep up and work in the team. Loose runners have specific qualities like distracting moose in the trail, a natural desire to keep up with the team, trail manners such as keeping out of the way of the main team as well as making room for other teams that may need to pass. In a pinch some have even taken on leadership roles far out in front of the team even if they have never run lead during their entire working career.
